The Melbourne Metro Rail Tunnel aims to create five new stations to service the city in a complete rehaul of Melbourne’s underground system. The stations: CBD North; CBD South; Arden; Parkville and Domain, link old with new and aim to serve new customers as Melbourne’s public transport passengers increase.

With Melbourne recently becoming the fastest growing city, this increasing populous is expected to double by 2050. This will put a huge strain on the current slow, inaccurate and outdated rail network. In the next 20 years, the population of the City of Melbourne alone is expected to grow by over 100,000, to over 250,000 people, and this does not include the larger total population of Greater Melbourne, which encompasses almost 5 million people in 2016.

Current improvements all across the city and suburbs, such as: level crossing removals, upgrades in signalling, and new trains, will accommodate this expected increase in people, along with the Metro Rail Tunnel. Considering a large amount of people work in the inner city, these extra stations and trains will give people the freedom to choose from different services to get them where they need to go.

The amount of jobs this project will generate over the next 10 years will expand into many different areas such as: engineering; construction; communications; planning, and into finance and accounting. 4700 is the number of jobs currently being stated by the Victorian Government, however there is potential for many more, taking into account the wide scope of this extensive project.
